My Favorite Spring Family Photo Locations in Indianapolis
Spring is one of the most beautiful times of year for family photos in Indianapolis. After the long Midwest winter, everything begins to bloom again—trees fill with blossoms, parks turn vibrant green, and the weather finally becomes comfortable for outdoor sessions.
As one of many Indianapolis family photographers, I’m always excited when spring arrives because it opens up so many beautiful location options for family sessions. If you’re planning spring family photos in Indianapolis, here are some of my favorite locations that offer stunning backdrops and plenty of variety.

One of the most classic locations for photos is Holcomb Gardens on the campus of Butler University.
Holcomb Gardens offers a beautiful mix of manicured gardens, stone architecture, and scenic pathways. In the spring, flowering trees and fresh greenery create the perfect soft, romantic backdrop for family portraits.
I especially love this location for families with younger children because there are plenty of open paths for kids to explore while still capturing timeless portraits.
If you love a historic and charming city feel, Lockerbie Square is a wonderful option for spring sessions.
This neighborhood is full of brick streets, historic homes, and beautiful gardens that start blooming in the spring months. The combination of architecture and greenery gives family photos a unique character that feels both elegant and relaxed.
Lockerbie Square is also perfect for families who want an urban Indianapolis look while still having natural elements in the background.
One of the most magical spring photo opportunities in the city happens when the cherry blossoms bloom near the Central Canal in White River State Park.
For a short window each spring, the cherry blossom trees create a soft pink canopy that makes family photos feel truly special. The canal also offers beautiful water views, bridges, and city scenery that add variety to a session.
Because the blossoms only last for a short time each year, these sessions are always popular and fill quickly when the bloom arrives.
Another hidden gem for spring family photos is Highland Park.
This location offers one of the best skyline views in the city along with open green space and blooming trees during the spring season. It’s a fantastic spot for families who want both natural scenery and a subtle downtown Indianapolis backdrop.
Sunset sessions here are especially beautiful as the city skyline begins to glow behind the park.
For families who love classic architecture and timeless backdrops, the Indiana War Memorial and the surrounding monuments offer a stunning setting.
The grand stone architecture, wide walkways, and nearby green spaces provide a clean and elegant look for family portraits. In the spring, the surrounding trees and landscaping add a soft natural touch to the historic setting.
This area also photographs beautifully in both morning and evening light.
Spring sessions are always popular because the blooming trees, comfortable weather, and fresh greenery create the perfect setting for updated family portraits.
If you’re considering spring family photos in Indianapolis, these locations are some of the best places in the city to capture beautiful memories together.
Whether you prefer gardens, city streets, historic architecture, or scenic parks, Indianapolis offers so many wonderful options for family photography during the spring season.
Spring family photos in Indianapolis are typically best from late March through early May. During this time, flowering trees begin blooming and parks fill with fresh greenery. Locations like Central Canal near White River State Park are especially popular when the cherry blossoms appear for a short window each year.
Some of the most beautiful spring photo locations include:
Each location offers a slightly different style depending on the look you want for your family photos.
Soft colors and light fabrics work beautifully for spring family photos. Popular choices include:
Coordinating colors rather than matching outfits helps create a natural, timeless look in your photos. I have a client style guide available to all my clients who book, too!
Both options can work beautifully depending on the location and your family’s schedule. Morning sessions are often great for families with young children, while evening sessions provide warm golden light just before sunset.
Locations with open views—like Highland Park—can be especially beautiful during sunset.
Spring is one of the busiest seasons for Indianapolis family photographers, so booking 1–3 months in advance is usually recommended to secure your preferred date.
