A first look is one of the most emotional and intimate moments of your wedding day. As an Indianapolis wedding photographer, I’ve had the honor of capturing countless first looks at beautiful venues. If you’re considering adding this special moment to your wedding timeline, here’s how to ensure it’s absolutely perfect.
Selecting a stunning and private location is key to creating a meaningful first look. A quiet, secluded spot ensures an intimate moment without distractions. Finding a good location with a pretty background and privacy is key. I usually look for a pretty tree, garden, pocket of landscaping near your venue, near a pond, or fireplace, if indoors! The possibilities are endless!
To avoid feeling rushed, work with your photographer to schedule enough time for the first look and portraits. Ideally, plan for at least 30-45 minutes to savor the moment and capture stunning images before moving on to wedding party photos.
While some couples choose to have their wedding party or family nearby, keeping the first look just between you and your partner allows for raw, genuine emotions. If you’d like a more private moment, ensure that your photographer helps find a tucked-away spot.
Seeing each other for the first time on your wedding day is incredibly special. Take a deep breath, embrace the moment, and let your emotions flow naturally. Many couples exchange handwritten letters or share a quiet conversation before the ceremony.
Your photographer will guide you through the moment, ensuring that you get natural and candid photos. Be sure to discuss expectations beforehand, whether you want a more documentary-style approach or slightly posed portraits.
Lighting can make or break your first look photos. The best time for natural, flattering light is in the late morning or early afternoon, especially if you’re having your wedding in outdoor Indianapolis locations like White River State Park or The Indianapolis Canal.
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the day, but remember to focus on each other. This moment is just for you two—so take it in fully, laugh, cry, and enjoy the intimacy before the big celebration begins.
A first look is a beautiful addition to any wedding day, allowing you to share a special moment with your soon-to-be spouse before the ceremony. This moment will be one of the most unforgettable parts of your day.
