Hi, friends! I’m Kaylee Creighton, a wedding photographer with three years of experience—two of which I’ve spent as a full-time wedding pro. Over my career, I’ve been honored to have my work published in over 70 international print and web publications. Throughout my journey, I’ve developed a passion for educating brides and photographers, so I’ve decided to write a few blog posts to help guide you through the wedding world. I hope you find this post helpful!
Every so often, I’m sitting down with a couple over coffee, and the bride pulls out a list she found on Pinterest titled “What to Ask Your Wedding Photographer.” More often than not, I’ve already answered most of these questions or planned to address them during our conversation. But today, I wanted to share with you a few key questions that every bride should ask her photographer before booking. These are the same questions I make sure to cover with all my potential clients to ensure a smooth experience leading up to the wedding day.
This question is crucial. A professional wedding photographer should have protocols in place to avoid losing any photos, whether it’s due to equipment failure or human error. Ask your photographer about their backup strategies, such as using dual memory cards, cloud storage, or even a second shooter to ensure no moments are missed. A true professional will always be prepared for unexpected circumstances.
Accidents happen—it’s a fact of life. However, before booking any wedding vendor, you should always ensure they’re fully insured. Insurance protects both you and the vendor in case something goes wrong. Whether it’s equipment failure, accidental damage, or other mishaps, you want a photographer who is prepared for the unexpected.
This is a yes-or-no question. Your wedding photographer should always have backup gear, such as an extra camera, lens, flash, and memory cards, in case something breaks or malfunctions. The last thing you want is for the photographer to miss important moments due to equipment failure. Although it’s rare for equipment to break down, being prepared ensures your day goes smoothly no matter what.
It’s essential to know when you can expect to receive your wedding photos. Turnaround time varies by photographer, but typically, it takes anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks to receive your images. Be sure this is clearly outlined in your contract so there are no surprises. Avoid being blindsided and asking for your photos immediately after the wedding.
This is a huge one. Never hire a photographer—or any vendor—without a contract. A contract ensures both parties are on the same page about expectations, services, and deliverables. Important points that should be included in your photographer’s contract are:
Having everything in writing protects both you and the photographer and ensures that your day will go as smoothly as possible.
The way your photographer delivers images can vary. Some photographers provide digital galleries, USB drives, or even printed albums. You should ask about the format and delivery method early on so there are no surprises. Additionally, clarify your rights when it comes to printing and sharing images. Some photographers offer full rights, while others may place restrictions on where you can print or share your photos.
Having a second shooter can make a big difference in the variety and coverage of your wedding photos. Ask if your photographer offers a second shooter and whether it’s included in the price or if it’s an additional cost. A second shooter can capture moments you might otherwise miss, like the groom’s reaction when the bride walks down the aisle or the guests’ candid interactions during the reception.
In Conclusion
These are just a few of the important questions to ask when considering your wedding photographer. Remember, your wedding photos are one of the most important investments you’ll make on your big day. Make sure you choose a photographer who is not only talented but also trustworthy, reliable, and well-prepared for your wedding day!
Happy planning,
Kaylee Creighton
