Every once in a while, everything comes together perfectly.
The weather is beautiful, the light is incredible, the baby is content, and the location feels like it was made specifically for photographs. That was exactly the case during the Chaffin family’s newborn session with sweet baby Palmer.
As an Indy newborn photographer, I photograph most newborn sessions indoors, whether in my downtown Indianapolis studio or in my clients’ homes. But every now and then, an unexpected opportunity presents itself, and this session turned into one of my favorite newborn galleries because of it.
As I arrived for the Chaffin family’s newborn session, I couldn’t help but notice how perfect the conditions were outside.
The light was soft and beautiful. The weather was comfortable. Their backyard was absolutely gorgeous. Everything was lining up in a way that photographers dream about.
I took a chance and asked if they would be interested in stepping outside for a few photographs.
Thankfully, they were completely on board.
I’m so grateful they trusted me because the images we created outdoors ended up being some of my favorites from the entire session.
Outdoor newborn photos aren’t something many families consider when planning their newborn session, but when conditions are right, they can be absolutely magical.
Natural outdoor light creates a soft, organic look that is difficult to replicate anywhere else. The colors feel rich and timeless, and the connection between family members often shines through in such an effortless way.
I especially love incorporating natural surroundings because they add depth, texture, and warmth without distracting from what matters most—your baby and your family.
The result is a gallery that feels both intimate and beautifully unique.
Of course, beautiful light and a gorgeous backyard only get you so far. The real star of the session was baby Palmer.
She was the sweetest little thing and so incredibly tiny. There is something so special about photographing newborns during those first few weeks when they still fit perfectly in their parents’ arms and seem impossibly small.
These early days pass so quickly, which is why newborn photography means so much to me. It’s about preserving the details parents never want to forget—the tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, soft cheeks, and overwhelming love that fills the room when a new baby arrives.
Palmer was an absolute dream, and it was such a joy getting to document this season for her family.
One of the reasons I love lifestyle newborn photography is that every family brings something different to their session.
Some sessions take place entirely indoors. Some happen in my natural light studio in downtown Indianapolis. And occasionally, families have a backyard so beautiful and weather conditions so perfect that we can create something truly special outside.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to newborn photography. My goal is always to create images that feel authentic to your family while taking advantage of whatever opportunities the day presents.
For the Chaffin family, that meant embracing an unexpected outdoor adventure that resulted in some truly dreamy photographs.
I am so grateful I had the opportunity to connect with the Chaffin family and meet sweet baby Palmer. Sessions like this remind me why I love photographing newborns and why I always keep my eyes open for creative possibilities.
If you’re looking for an Indy newborn Photographer or you’re interested in an in-home newborn session, studio newborn photography, or even outdoor newborn photos if conditions allow, I would love to help document this incredibly special season for your family.
Because sometimes the most beautiful moments are the ones you never planned.
