One of my favorite things about being a family photographer is getting to watch families grow over the years, and the Cooke family is a perfect example of why I love what I do.
I first worked with this sweet family last year, so I was excited to see them again for their spring mini session in Franklin, Indiana. Sometimes the best sessions require a little flexibility, and this one certainly did!
Originally, we had to reschedule because of rain. Then, as our new session date approached, the forecast once again showed the possibility of wet weather. Instead of stressing about it, the Cooke family decided to embrace whatever the morning brought. We joked about being prepared to play in the rain if needed and making the most of the experience no matter what.
Thankfully, Mother Nature decided to cooperate.
While we didn’t get sunshine, we were treated to a beautiful overcast spring morning, which is actually one of my favorite conditions for family photography. Soft, even light creates gorgeous skin tones and allows families to focus on enjoying their time together without squinting into bright sunlight.
As if seeing the Cooke family again wasn’t exciting enough, they arrived with the sweetest surprise.
Since our last session together, their family had grown by one.
Baby brother had made his arrival just a few weeks earlier, and I had no idea I was about to meet the newest member of the family. Seeing families return year after year is special, but getting to document major milestones like welcoming a new baby is one of the greatest honors of being a photographer.
He was absolutely perfect and fit right into the family as though he had always been there.
One of the reasons I encourage families to schedule annual photo sessions is because so much can change in just a year.
Children grow, personalities develop, and families evolve in ways that often feel impossible to notice day-to-day. Then you look back at last year’s photos and suddenly realize just how much has changed.
For the Cooke family, this year brought one of the biggest changes possible—a brand new baby brother to love.
Watching older siblings step into their new roles and seeing the excitement that comes with welcoming a new family member is always one of my favorite things to photograph.
Franklin is one of my favorite communities to photograph families. It offers beautiful outdoor spaces, a welcoming small-town feel, and plenty of opportunities to create timeless family portraits.
As a Franklin family photographer and Johnson County family photographer, I love helping families preserve the moments that often pass by far too quickly. Whether you’re celebrating a new baby, updating annual family photos, or simply documenting this season of life, these photographs become even more valuable as the years go by.
The Cooke family reminded me once again that sometimes the best sessions happen when you’re willing to embrace whatever the day brings. A little uncertainty in the forecast, an overcast morning, and a surprise new family member turned into one of my favorite sessions of the season.
Congratulations to the Cooke family on their newest addition. I am so excited for all the adventures that await your growing family and honored to document this chapter for you.
