One of the most common questions I receive as an Indianapolis newborn photographer is whether families should choose an in-home newborn session or a studio newborn session. The truth is, there isn’t one right answer—both options can create beautiful images and preserve this special season of life. The best choice depends on your family’s style, priorities, and what you want your photos to feel like years from now.
As a newborn and family photographer with a natural light studio in downtown Indianapolis, I’ve photographed plenty of both. Here are a few things to consider when deciding which option is right for your growing family.

One thing I hear often is, “My toddler will behave better at home.”
Honestly, I usually find the opposite to be true.
While every child is different, toddlers are often more distracted in their own environment. Their toys are nearby, their favorite snacks are within reach, and there are endless things competing for their attention. Being at home doesn’t automatically mean an easier session.
The biggest advantage of being at home is convenience. Everything you need is already there. If baby needs a diaper change, a different outfit, a feeding, or a favorite comfort item, it’s all within arm’s reach.
One of the biggest benefits of a studio newborn session is simplicity.
You simply show up, enjoy your session, and leave. There is no need to clean the house, move furniture, tidy bedrooms, or worry about whether your space photographs well.
My downtown Indianapolis natural light studio is designed specifically for newborn and family photography. Because I photograph there every day, I know exactly how the light behaves throughout the session. Consistent natural light helps create clean, timeless images with beautiful skin tones and a soft, airy feel.
The studio also provides a neutral canvas. Simple backdrops, minimal distractions, and clean styling allow the focus to remain exactly where it belongs—on your family and your new baby.
Of course, not every family wants a clean studio look.
Many parents love the warmth and personality that comes with photographing their newborn at home. Your favorite chair, meaningful family heirlooms, cozy blankets, and everyday spaces can tell a story that is uniquely yours.
For some families, the nursery is a major part of that story. After spending months designing and decorating the perfect space for their baby, it makes sense to want those details documented. Nursery photos can become treasured memories years down the road when the room has changed and your baby has grown.
An in-home newborn session captures your family’s life exactly as it is during those first precious weeks.

This is often the deciding factor for many families.
While I never expect a home to be perfect, most parents naturally feel some pressure to tidy up before an in-home session. Bedrooms, nurseries, and living spaces that will appear in photographs may need a little preparation beforehand.
With a studio session, that responsibility disappears entirely. The space is already prepared and ready for beautiful photographs. Parents can focus on getting themselves and their children ready without worrying about the condition of their home.
The answer depends entirely on what matters most to you.
If you love a clean, timeless aesthetic, want predictable natural light, and prefer an easy experience where you can simply arrive and leave, a studio newborn session may be the perfect fit.
If you value documenting your family’s home, want to include meaningful spaces like the nursery, and love the cozy feeling of everyday life in your images, an in-home newborn session might be exactly what you’re looking for.
No matter which option you choose, the goal remains the same: creating beautiful photographs that celebrate your newest family member and preserve these fleeting newborn days before they pass by.
If you’re expecting and searching for an Indianapolis newborn photographer, I’d love to help you decide which session style best fits your family. Whether you choose an in-home newborn session or visit my natural light studio in downtown Indianapolis, we’ll create images you’ll treasure for years to come.
