One of my favorite parts of being an Indianapolis family photographer is getting to meet new families and watch them grow over the years. I first met the Winter family during my spring mini sessions at Coxhall Gardens Children’s Garden in Carmel, Indiana, and they are so sweet!
The Children’s Garden is one of my favorite locations for family photography in the Indianapolis area. While there are countless beautiful parks around central Indiana, this particular spot offers something unique that photographers absolutely love: natural light.
As a photographer, I am always paying attention to light, and the Children’s Garden at Coxhall Gardens has some of the best natural reflectors around. The combination of concrete pathways, stone features, rock elements, and thoughtfully designed landscaping helps bounce beautiful light back onto my clients.
This creates soft, flattering skin tones and bright, natural-looking images without harsh shadows. The result is a clean, timeless look that photographs beautifully throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons.
Beyond the incredible light, the landscaping is absolutely stunning. Every corner seems to offer another beautiful backdrop, making it easy to create a gallery full of variety without ever leaving the location.
One thing that makes this location unique is that it was designed for children to play and explore. Because of that, I’m pretty particular about when I photograph here.
I almost exclusively schedule sessions at the Children’s Garden during the early morning hours. This helps ensure that families can enjoy their photo session without worrying about large crowds, and it also allows children visiting the garden to enjoy the space without interruption.
Morning sessions also help avoid having other children accidentally appear in the background of your photos, which is something many parents appreciate.
It’s a win-win for everyone involved and helps preserve the peaceful atmosphere that makes this location so special.
If you’ve worked with me before, you’ve probably heard me say that I am a huge advocate for morning family sessions when little kids are involved.
In fact, I always joke with parents that if you have a bad day, it hasn’t happened yet!
While every child is different, most toddlers are happiest, most rested, and most cooperative earlier in the day. Morning sessions often mean fewer meltdowns, more genuine smiles, and a much more relaxed experience for the entire family.
By the evening, many young children are tired, hungry, overstimulated, or simply ready for their normal bedtime routines. Scheduling family photos in the morning helps us work with your child’s natural rhythm instead of against it.
As a Carmel family photographer and Indianapolis family photographer, my goal is always to create a stress-free experience that allows your family’s personality to shine through. Choosing the right time of day can make a huge difference.
The Winter family’s session was the perfect example of why I love spring family photos at Coxhall Gardens. Between the gorgeous landscaping, beautiful natural light, and a morning schedule that worked perfectly for the kids, we were able to create a gallery full of authentic smiles and sweet family moments.
If you’re looking for a family photographer in Carmel, Indianapolis, Fishers, Westfield, or the surrounding areas, Coxhall Gardens Children’s Garden is definitely one of my favorite locations to recommend for families with young children.
The combination of beautiful scenery, amazing light, and peaceful morning sessions creates the perfect setting for timeless family photographs you’ll treasure for years to come.
