The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Family Photo Outfits
As an Indianapolis family photographer, I know that one of the most common questions I get is: “What should we wear for our family photo session?” Choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference in the look and feel of your images. The goal is to coordinate your outfits in a way that feels natural, timeless, and beautiful—not to match exactly. Here’s my guide to help you put together picture-perfect outfits for your next session!
A well-balanced color palette typically includes 4-6 complementary colors. Instead of dressing everyone in the same shade, opt for colors that coordinate and complement one another. Here are some easy ways to find inspiration for what to wear to your family photo session:
Neutral and muted colors tend to photograph best. Soft pastels and earth tones work beautifully, while overly bright colors can cast unwanted reflections on the skin. For example, while I love a bold neon dress, the reflection it creates on your face isn’t always flattering. Similarly, avoid overly dark, heavy colors that can look too harsh.
A great way to build a cohesive look is to start with mom’s outfit and coordinate the rest of the family’s attire around it. When mom feels beautiful and confident, it sets the tone for the entire session!
Accessories should enhance, not distract from, your family’s connection in the photos.
Every woman has areas of her body she feels self-conscious about, and selecting the right outfit can make all the difference. When choosing what to wear to your family photo session consider the following;
Once mom’s outfit is set, it’s time to choose complementary looks for the rest of the family:
Lastly, choose all the boys’ outfits, including Dad. Jeans, khakis, or slacks with a button-down or sweater look amazing for the guys. Soft, neutral colors are the best choice. Solid shades of light gray, blue, khaki, and white are a strong complement to most women’s outfits, whereas pinstripes or plaid patterns tend to distract the eye.
I also recommend staying away from graphics, logos, and shorts. Dark jeans look great with a pale-colored henley tee shirt, for example!
If you have multiple sons, don’t feel like you need to put them all in the same type of outfit. One of your sons could wear a button-down, while the other one wears a long-sleeve t-shirt. Mixing up the wardrobe pieces will bring great visual interest to the photos.
Planning your family’s wardrobe doesn’t have to be overwhelming! Start with a beautiful dress for mom, choose a soft, timeless color palette, and focus on comfort and coordination over matching. By following these tips, you’ll create stunning, cohesive images that you’ll love for years to come.
